THE EFFECT OF METHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACT OF SOLANUM TORVUM ON THE KIDNEY FUNCTION OF ALBINO WISTAR RATS FED WITH HIGH CHOLESTEROL DIET
Abstract
25 Adult albino wistar rats (female) weighing 140g- 210g bodyweight were randomly assigned in to 5 groups of 5 rats each. Group 1 and 2 were hyperlipidemic groups and treated with 200mg/kg and 500mg/kg bodyweight of Solanum torvum methanolic extract, respectively through oral routes for 14 days. Group 3 was hyperlipidemic group (positive control) treated with a standard drug (atorvastatin 20mg/kg), Group 4: hyperlipidemic and not treated with extract and standard drug while group 5 served as the Normal control. All experimental rats were allowed free access to feed and clean drinking water ad libitum. After the 14 days treatment, the rats were sacrificed medioventrically and blood collected through cardiac puncture into EDTA sample bottles for the determination or assay of creatine, urea, uric acid and total bilibrubin using a spectrophotometer. The results obtained indicated that there was a non significant change in serum creatinine in group 1,2,3 and 4 when compared to group 5 (normal) but when compared to group 3, creatinine level in group 2 showed a significant (p
