Abstract

ABSTRACT This study evaluates the antibacterial activity of Psidium guajava (P. guajava) leaf aqueous and ethanolic extracts against selected bacterial isolates: Escherichia coli, Shigella, Klebsiella, and Proteus. The aqueous extract exhibited moderate antibacterial activity, with inhibition zones ranging from 10 mm to 16 mm at different concentrations. The ethanolic extract demonstrated higher antibacterial activity, with inhibition zones reaching up to 19 mm at 100 mg/mL, indicating its stronger efficacy compared to the aqueous extract. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for both extracts was 6.5 mg/mL, while the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was 12.5 mg/mL for all tested isolates. This suggests that the extracts possess both bacteriostatic and bactericidal properties, with ethanol proving to be a better solvent for bioactive compound extraction. These findings support the traditional use of P. guajava in treating bacterial infections and highlight its potential as a natural antibacterial agent for pharmaceutical and therapeutic applications.
