Abstract

The dried powdered sample of the stem bark of Stereospermum kunthianum was subjected to successive extraction using hexane, ethyl-acetate, acetone and methanol in order of increasing polarity using soxhlet-extractor. The phytochemical screening and the bioactivity studies of the extracts were conducted using standard methods. The result of the phytochemical screening showed that the stem bark extracts contained tannins, saponins, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, phlobatannins, terpenoids and alkaloids in the stem bark extracts. Among the extracts, Ethyl -acetate and methanol extracts exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) result showed that, The methanol extract had an MIC of 12.mg/ml against both S. aureus and E. coli, While the ethyl-acetate extract had an MIC of 12.5mg/ml against S. aureus and 25mg/ml against E. coli. Compared to the standard antibiotic (Chloramphenicol), the plant extracts demonstrated lower potency.
