ASSESMENT ON THE FORCES RESPONSIBLE FOR DROPOUT AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS A CASE STUDY OF GWALE LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KANO STATE, NIGERIA.
Abstract
This study examines the forces responsible for dropout among secondary school students in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. The study investigated social, economic, personal, and school-related factors contributing to students’ withdrawal from formal education. Using existing literature and observations, the research highlights that poverty, lack of parental support, child labour, early marriage, peer influence, poor school facilities, teacher–student relationship issues, and weak educational policies are major determinants of dropout. The study emphasizes that dropout is a multi-dimensional problem requiring collaboration among parents, school authorities, government agencies, and community leaders. Recommendations are made to reduce dropout and improve retention in secondary schools across Gwale LGA.
