Abstract

Regular languages, fundamental to formal language theory and computer science, are a class of languages recognizable by finite automata and describable by regular expressions. This project provides a comprehensive exploration of the core operations defined on regular languages, including union, concatenation, and Kleene star. We demonstrate that the family of regular languages is closed under these fundamental operations, as well as under other essential operations such as intersection, complement, and difference. The project establishes these closure properties through constructive proofs, illustrating how to build finite automata or regular expressions for the resulting language. Furthermore, we examine practical decision properties like the membership, emptiness, and equivalence problems, solidifying the significance of regular languages in applications ranging from compiler design to pattern matching. This project systematically investigates the algebraic and computational properties of regular languages through the lens of operations performed upon them. We begin by establishing that the set of all regular languages over an alphabet Σ forms a Kleene algebra, closed under the three fundamental operations: union, concatenation, and Kleene star. The central focus is on proving closure under a wider set of operations, including intersection, complement, difference, reversal, and homomorphism. For each, we provide constructive algorithms—typically by transforming finite automata (DFAs and NFAs) or manipulating regular expressions—that effectively compute a representation for the resulting language.
