Abstract

The use of local materials is of paramount importance to sustainable construction because of its availability, cost effectiveness and ability to protect the environment. This research is to examine the stabilization of weak laterite soil using flamboyant pod ash. Laboratory tests that were performed included sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, natural moisture content test and compaction test. Nigerian laterite samples were chosen for this research because they are abundantly available and also used in many geotechnical engineering works in Nigeria. Laterite soil was obtained from a depth of 1-2m below the ground surface. The laterite sample considered for this research work were gotten from the ongoing road construction at Ojoku road along federal polytechnic Offa permanent site, Offa, Kwara state at chainage 35 + 381. The laterite materials were collected and air dried. Commercially available flamboyant Pod ash got from calcined flamboyant Pods ash were used to stabilize the laterite materials differently. The Pod ash were passed through No. 40 sieve before usage. Based on the laboratory tests, Pod ash showed a good effect on stabilization treatment of laterite soil.
