EFFECT OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ON STUDENTS INTEREST, ATTITUDES AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS IN GWALE SECONDARY SCHOOLS KANO NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study aims to examine the effect of instructional materials on students’ interest, attitudes and academic achievement in periodic table of elements in Gwale secondary schools, Kano-Nigeria. Quasi-experimental design was adopted for the study. All the senior secondary schools under the Science School Board (SSB) in Gwale made up the study population. Four schools were randomly selected for the study using Advisors (2006)’s table of sample size and the sample was grouped into Experimental Group (EG) and Control Group (CG). After four weeks of teaching the EG with Instructional materials, a self-designed Chemistry Achievement Test on Periodic Table of Elements (CATPTE) with a 0.05 reliability coefficient using t-test method was administered. The data collected and analysed revealed that the EG taught with instructional materials performed better than the CG. It was also found that the female students in the EG performed slightly better than their male counterparts. A conclusion was made that instructional materials have a positive effect on students’ achievement and recommend that Chemistry educators should be more creative in using instructional materials for Chemistry teaching especially periodic table of elements.
