EFFECTS OF MANIHOT ESCULENTA LEAF ON THE TISSUE LEVELS OF TRIACYLGLYCEROLS IN STREPTOZOTOCIN-TREATED RATS
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, is frequently complicated by dyslipidemia, including the abnormal accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAGs) in tissues. This study investigated the ameliorative effect of Manihot esculenta (cassava) leaf extract on these lipid abnormalities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Following a 28-day treatment period, the diabetic control group showed significant elevations in tissue TAG levels, hyperglycemia, and weight loss. Administration of the cassava leaf extract resulted in a dose-dependent reduction of TAG concentrations in the liver, kidney, and pancreas, with the 400 mg/kg dose proving most effective, normalizing lipid and glucose levels to a degree comparable to metformin. The findings conclusively demonstrate the potent antihypertriglyceridemic and antihyperglycemic properties of Manihot esculenta, supporting its potential as a complementary therapeutic agent for managing diabetes and its associated dyslipidemia.
