THE IMPACT OF INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS ON ADULT LEARNERS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMMES IN ONDO STATE
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of instructional methods on adult learners’ academic performance in distance learning programmes in Ondo State, Nigeria. The study specifically aimed to assess how various instructional strategies affect comprehension, engagement, and retention; identify the challenges adult learners face in distance education; and explore the role of technology in enhancing instructional delivery. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and a sample of 250 adult learners was selected for the study. Data were collected using a validated and reliable researcher-designed questionnaire.
The findings revealed that diverse instructional methods particularly interactive techniques such as group discussions, peer reviews, video-based instruction, and self-paced learning significantly improve adult learners’ academic performance. These methods contributed to greater comprehension of course content and fostered learner autonomy, leading to increased motivation and academic success. Additionally, strategies like regular quizzes and collaborative learning projects were found to enhance engagement and knowledge retention.
The study also found that adult learners face challenges such as balancing academic, family, and work responsibilities, poor internet connectivity, and inadequate instructor feedback. However, flexible instructional approaches, including asynchronous learning and recorded lectures, were effective in mitigating some of these barriers. Furthermore, technology was shown to play a crucial role in enhancing the distance learning experience through the use of Learning Management Systems (LMS), video conferencing tools, and mobile applications.
In conclusion, the integration of effective instructional methods and appropriate technology is vital to improving the academic outcomes of adult learners in distance education. The study recommends adopting a blended instructional approach, providing consistent feedback, addressing learner challenges, and investing in digital infrastructure. These efforts will help create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for adult learners in Ondo State and beyond.
