Abstract

ABSTRACT Chronic kidney disease is a global health problem with an increasing number of renal replacement transplants. It is associated with changes in the haematologic system resulting in anaemia. The study was set to investigate the haematologic system of CKD individuals and with predisposition for anaemia. The criteria for having CKD is when kidney damage is ≥ 3 months or glomerular filtration rate < 60ml/min per 1.73m². A total number of 100 subjects: 50 CKD patients and 50 healthy subjects who served as control were recruited for the study. Ethical approval for the study as well as informed consent of the participants were obtained from the Ethics committee of the faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State. The parameters studied include Hb, PCV, RBC, ESR, MCV, MCHC, RDW, T&D WBC, NLR, PLR and HsCRP, the haematologic parameters were analyzed using Automated haematology Analizer, ESR was by Westergren Manual Method, HsCRP was by ELISA Technique whereas NLR and PLR was derived. Data generated were statistically analyzed. The Mean±SD for TWBC, NEUT, LYMPH, MONO, EOSIN, BASO, RDW-SD, ESR, and HsCRP ( 8.09 plus/minus 4.142 * 10 ^ 9 / 1 , 4.22 plus/minus 3.314 * 10 ^ 9 / l 2.95 plus/minus 0.691 * 10 ^ 9 / 1 boxed 38 plus/minus 0.126 * 10 ^ 9 / 1 , 0.39 plus/minus 0.081 * 10 ^ 9 / 1 0.09 plus/minus 0.04 * 10 ^ 9 / 1 61.52+21.9221, 27.67±10.392mm/hr. 6.45±3.835ng/ml, respectively) in CKD subjects were higher and statistically significant (p
