Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the development of rural areas, with a focus on understanding how their interventions in education, health care, agriculture, and community empowerment contribute to sustainable development. Rural development remains a critical component of national growth, yet many rural communities continue to experience poverty, poor infrastructure, limited access to basic social services, and weak governance structures despite the presence of government programs. Employing a descriptive survey research design, the study sampled 200 respondents, including rural dwellers, community leaders, and NGO workers from selected rural communities. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that captured information on respondents’ perceptions of NGO activities, areas of intervention, community participation, and challenges faced in project implementation. The study revealed that NGOs significantly contribute to rural development by providing educational support, health outreach programs, micro-credit schemes, skill acquisition initiatives, and advocacy for marginalized groups. Their efforts were also found to enhance community participation, self-reliance, and local ownership of development projects. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, duplication of projects, lack of proper monitoring, and weak collaboration with government agencies were identified as limitations to their effectiveness. The findings highlight that while NGOs play a pivotal role in bridging development gaps, their impact is often constrained by structural and financial barriers. The study recommends stronger collaboration between NGOs, government institutions, and local communities, sustainable funding mechanisms, and improved accountability systems to maximize the effectiveness of NGO-led development interventions. Understanding the role and limitations of NGOs is essential for policymakers, development practitioners, and community leaders aiming to promote inclusive and sustainable rural development in Nigeria.
