ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF MICROORGANISM FROM CASSAVA WASTEWATER OBTAINED FROM A GARRI PROCESSING MILL, ITA AMO AREA, ILORIN, KWARA STATE
Abstract
Cassava is scientifically known as Manihot esculanta and also referred to as manioc or mandioca is a common and popular food for the African population. During the processing of cassava tubers in various products, liquid waste waters generated was reported to cause serious havoc to vegetation, houses and bring about infection. Hence, this study was carried out to isolate, enumerate, and identify microorganisms present in cassava wastewater and also determine the physicochemical properties of the cassava wastewater obtained from Garri processing mill in Ita amo Area, Ilorin , Kwara state. The microorganism were identified using microscopic and biochemical characterization Bacterial counts in the wastewater ranged from 3.32 X 102 to 1.47 X 104 highlighting the potential health risks associated with its disposal. Cassava wastewater contains diverse microbial communities, Bacillus sp and Micrococcus sp. The physic-chemical parameter analysis of the wastewater were characterized by high acidity ranging with a pH range of 5.3 to 5.6, high biochemical oxygen demand, high chemical oxygen demand, cyanide content ranging from 48 to 50mg/l, high electrical conductivity ranged from 4750 to 4810 μ/cm and total dissolved solids ranging from 850 to 855 mg/l. More research work should be done on the effects of cassava mill effluent on the surrounding soils, crops its effect on human health.
