Abstract

ABSTRACT The rising number of vehicles and increasing cases of vehicle theft, especially in developing countries like Nigeria have made secure access control systems essential for institutions and organizations. Traditional manual methods such as tally systems and handwritten logs are prone to human error, inefficiency, and security breaches, highlighting the need for a more reliable solution. This project proposes the design and implementation of a mobile-based gate pass system that integrates Quick Response (QR) code scanning with identity logging to enhance vehicle access management. Each registered vehicle is assigned a unique QR code linked to the driver‟s photograph stored in a secure database. At entry or exit points, security personnel scan the QR code using the mobile app, and the system automatically displays the stored photo for verification before granting or denying access. The system was developed using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React Native, and Node.js) with JSON Web Token authentication, and key features include user registration, vehicle registration, QR code generation, scanning, access decision logging, and an admin dashboard. Testing at the Senate Building of Adekunle Ajasin University showed improved efficiency, reduced manual errors, and enhanced security compared to traditional systems, proving the solution to be a cost-effective and robust alternative to expensive RFID and biometric systems.
