ANTIOXIDANT AND HEALTH BENEFIT OF KURYA EXTRACT IN STRESSED INDUCED DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER
Abstract
ABSTRACT Kurya (Bombax costatum) is a traditional plant used in Northern Nigeria for its medicinal properties. In this study, I aimed to investigate the potential of kurya extract as a source of antioxidants using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. The extract was obtained by maceration with 90% methanol, and its antioxidant capacity was evaluated through negative geotaxis assay and lipid peroxidation (MDA) activity. My results showed that kurya extract significantly improved negative geotaxis performance in Drosophila melanogaster and reduced lipid peroxidation levels. Comparison with existing research showed that kurya extract had higher antioxidant potential than other traditional medicinal plants. These findings suggest that kurya extract has potential as a natural source of antioxidants for improving human health. However, the study has limitations such as the lack of investigation on gene expression and the small sample size. Future studies should explore the potential effects of kurya extract on gene expression and involve a larger sample size.
