EFFECTS OF SEENA OCIDENTALIS N-HEXANE LEAF EXTRACT ON ANTIOXIDANT STATUS OF RATS WITH CEL4-INDUCED TOXICITY
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the hepatoprotective potentials of Senna Occidentalis in a CCL4 induced
hepatotoxicity in rat model. The plant material was extracted using n-hexane as solvent and
Soxhlet apparatus. The extract was administered to wistar rats treated with CCL4 to induce liver
damage at doses of 400 and 800 mg/kg orally for 28 days. At the end of the experimental period,
the animals were sacrificed and liver harvested for antioxidant assays. Result showed improved
superoxide and catalase activities, while malondialdehyde an index of lipid peroxidation was
downregulated. In conclusion, the extract showed good antioxidant ability, which can be
exploited pharmacologically to manage liver disorders arising from oxidative stress.
