DESIGN AND PROCESS OPTIMIZATION OF AVOCADO OIL EXTRACTION
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the optimum condition for the extraction of oil from avocado pulp using hexane solvent. The independent variable considered were; solvent to sample ratio and extraction duration. The levels solvent to sample ratio were; 6:1, 8:1 and 10:1, while the extraction time considered were 3, 4 and 5 hrs. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used in the design of the experiment and a total of 11 runs was generated and was used for the extraction of oil from the pulp. The extracted oil samples were analysed for their yield, acid value, peroxide value and vitamin E content. The result obtained showed that the oil yield obtained ranged from 16.00 - 18.41%. The acid value, peroxide value and vitamin E content ranged from 1.95 - 4.20mgKOH/g, 1.30 3.66meq/kg and 16.82 19.07ug/100g respectively. The significance and adequacy of the model was measured in terms of F-value and p-value at 5% significance level (p≤0.05). The interaction effects were found to be non- significant in all the responses. The quadratic effects of all the independent variables on each of the responses were found to be significant (P
