QUANTIFICATION OF BISPHENOL A AND PHTHALATE IN CANAL WATER FROM FESTAC TOWN LAGOS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study assessed the concentration of Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates in canal water from Festac Town, Lagos, Nigeria. Water samples were collected and analyzed using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The results revealed detectable concentrations of BPA and several phthalate compounds including dibutyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, and di-n-hexyl phthalate. The presence of these contaminants indicates pollution likely originating from industrial activities, urban runoff, and improper waste disposal. These chemicals are known endocrine-disrupting compounds that may pose health risks to humans and aquatic organisms. The study highlights the need for environmental monitoring and improved waste management strategies to reduce contamination in water bodies.
