EFFECT OF BROKEN HOME ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENT STUDENTS IN GOVERNMENT SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL RIMI (CORE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL RIMI L.E.A, KATSINA STATE)
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of broken homes on the academic performance and personality development of adolescents in Senior Secondary Schools at Rimi Core Community Secondary School, Rimi LEA, Katsina State, Nigeria. Broken homes, characterized by parental separation or divorce, are believed to influence various aspects of adolescent development, including academic achievement and the development of social and emotional skills. The research adopts a descriptive survey design, targeting adolescents in Senior Secondary School level (SSS 1–3) within the institution. Data were collected using a combination of structured questionnaires and interviews with students, teachers, and school counselors. The findings indicate that adolescents from broken homes tend to exhibit lower academic performance compared to their peers from intact families. Additionally, these adolescents face challenges in emotional regulation, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships, which negatively impact their personality development. The study further reveals that socio-economic factors, the nature of parental conflict, and the support system available to these adolescents are significant mediators of these outcomes. The research concludes by recommending interventions such as counseling, peer support programs, and community engagement to mitigate the negative effects of broken homes on adolescents' academic and personal development.
