Abstract

Lead is a toxic heavy metal widely used in battery production and recycling. Workers involved in battery breaking and recycling are at risk of occupational exposure to lead through inhalation of lead dust and ingestion of contaminated materials. This study evaluated the effect of lead exposure on selected hematological parameters among battery breakers in Aba, Abia State. A cross-sectional study design was adopted involving battery breakers and a control group not occupationally exposed to lead. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for hemoglobin concentration, packed cell volume, red blood cell count, white blood cell count, and platelet count. Results indicated that battery breakers exposed to lead showed reduced hemoglobin concentration, reduced packed cell volume, and reduced red blood cell counts compared with the control group, while white blood cell counts were slightly elevated. These findings suggest that chronic exposure to lead affects the hematopoietic system and may lead to anemia and other blood disorders. The study recommends regular health monitoring, occupational safety education, and the use of protective equipment to reduce exposure among battery breakers.
