Abstract

The study investigated the impact of projected materials on the academic performance of tertiary institutions students in Biology in Katsina metropolis. Two objectives guided the study and these are to: Determine the difference in academic performance between Biology students taught using projected materials and lecture method, determine the effect of gender on Biology students' academic performance when using projected matcrials. Two research questions and hypotheses further guided the study. The study was a pre-test post-test experimental matched group design. The population of the study covers a total number of 849 UMYU Biology students. The sample of this study covered a total number of 95 Biology students. Two validated instrument with reliability coefficient of 0.8 and 0.7 namely attitude questionnaire and mastery test guided data collection. Two research questions raised were answered using mean and standard deviations while hypotheses were tested using independent t-test at 0.05level of significance by means of SPSS version 23.1. One was rejected while one was retained at 0.05 level of significance. From the findings, It was revealed by the study that the experimental group recorded the highest mean score than the control group, which shows that there is a significant difference in the mean academic performance of the students in the experimental and control groups. A significant difference implies a rejection of the null hypothesis and retaining the alternate hypothesis. Therefore, the null hypothesis that states that there is no significant difference in the mean academic performance scores between Biology students taught using projected materials and traditional teaching method was rejected. The significant difference indicates that teaching using projected materials is effective and leads to the attainment of the highest mean score in academic performance than the lecture method.Based on the findings of this study, the researcher hereby put forward the following recommendations: Having found that the use of projected materials in teaching enhances academic performance in biology, Biology teachers should employ its use to enhance academic performance in other Biology aspects, as such there is the need for the university to support the lecturers by adequately providing the projected materials to faculties, As it is proven that the use of projected materials in enhancing the academic performance of UMYU students is gender-friendly. Biology teachers should focus on using technology-enhanced instructional materials such as the projected materials and ensure both male and female students are equally taught using projected materials at all levels of education.
