Abstract

The environment is the basic natural habitat of living creatures. The environment houses the human beings, plants and the trees. It also includes the land, air and water. The resources contained in the environment are essential for the survival of living creatures and therefore must be protected. If these resources and the environment itself is not protected, the resources cannot be properly enjoyed, and the lives and living conditions of the human beings and living creatures will be exposed to great harm. The importance of environment to man and living organisms generally cannot be over-emphasized. Perhaps this is why the prominent anthropologist, Margaret Mead once asserted that “We will not have a society if the environment is destroyed”. In the same vein the great Spanish writer Jose Ortega Y ;Gasset eloquently pronounced that “I am plus my environment and if I do not maintain the latter, I do not maintain myself”.
