ANTIBACTERIAL EFFECTS OF MUSA SPECIES LEAF EXTRACT AGAINST SOME SELECTED BACTERIA PATHOGENS
Abstract
This study investigates the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial properties of four Musa species (Musa acuminata, Musa balbisiana, Musa sapientum, and Musa paradisiaca) using ethanol and hexane as solvents. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, volatile oils, cardiac glycosides, reducing sugars, and steroids, with significant variation across species and solvents. Ethanol extracts showed broader phytochemical diversity compared to hexane extracts. Antimicrobial activity was assessed against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ethanol extracts exhibited species-specific and concentration-dependent inhibitory effects, with Musa sapientum showing consistent activity against S. aureus and E. coli, while all species demonstrated limited activity against P. aeruginosa. These findings highlight the phytochemical richness and potential antimicrobial applications of Musa species, emphasizing the need for further research to optimize extraction methods and identify active compounds for pharmaceutical and industrial uses.
