SMALLHOLDER DOMESTIC TURKEY PRODUCTION IN SOKOTO NORTH AND SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS OF SOKOTO STATE

This study investigated smallholder domestic turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) production in Sokoto North and South Local Government Areas of Sokoto State. A survey was conducted using a pre-tested checklist administered to various turkey producers, using purposive sampling method, to assess their demographic characteristics, husbandry practices (housing, feeding, health control), breeding practices, stock offtake, challenges and prospects. Twenty-six (26) producers of domestic turkeys were covered in the study area. Findings showed that the majority of producers were female (14), married (14) and primarily engaged in turkey production for both home consumption and sale (12). They also showed that the producers primarily engaged in backyard rearing of indigenous turkeys (21), because of their adaptability to local conditions and low production costs. The study highlighted the significant role of turkey production in enhancing household food security and providing a source of income for the urban smallholder producers. However, challenges such as high feed prices (7) and disease conditions (7), turkey hens not incubating their eggs (4) were reported. Recommendations for increased productivity include adopting planned breeding programmes, enhancing education on best management practices and improving access to quality feed and veterinary services.
