Abstract

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen and can cause a wide range of healthcare associated infections like ventilator associated pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, urinary tract infections, peritonitis, etc. Acinetobacter infections are often extremely difficult to treat because of their widespread resistance to the major groups of antibiotics and are difficult to treat pathogens and can lead to treatment failure. This study is design to evaluate the antibiotics susceptibility profile of A. baumannii isolated from hospitals surface in Irun Akoko. In this study hospital samples including wash hand basin and surfaces samples from selected hospitals in Irun Akoko were collected. Isolates were identified by standard protocol and further tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method according to CLSI guidelines. A total of 15 bacterial isolates were obtained from the samples collected. The isolates showed high resistant to Meropenem (85%) and Ceftazidime (70%). All isolates were found to be sensitive to Amikacin while 70% were susceptible to Ciprofloxacin. The results obtained in this study depicts that surface and wash hand basins in the studied hospital are contaminated with multidrug resistant A. baumannii. Multi-drug resistant isolates are increasing day by day, due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics in healthcare settings. Reducing and restricting the use of antimicrobials to only those situations where they are warranted, at proper dose and for the proper duration is the most appropriate solution.
