ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PLASTIC DEGRADING BACTERIA IN DUMPSITE IN SOME AREAS INSIDE BORNO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the isolation and characterization of bacterial species from waste dumpsites in Borno State, Nigeria, focusing on their potential for biodegradation. Soil samples were collected from three dumpsites in Mafa Local Government Area and analyzed for bacterial content. Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus spp., and Streptococcus spp. were identified as the predominant bacterial species, with S. aureus being the most frequently isolated. Physiochemical parameters such as pH and temperature were recorded, revealing conditions favorable for bacterial growth. The findings contribute to understanding the microbial ecology of waste dumpsites and their potential application in bioremediation strategies.
