IMPACT OF ORPHANAGE HOME ON THE CHILD PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT IN AKURE, ONDO STATE.
Abstract
The study investigates the impact of orphanage homes on the personality development of
children in Odo State. The research reviewed theories and concepts related to orphanage
homes, personality development, and child socialization in these institutions. It used a
descriptive survey research design with a sample of five randomly selected orphanage
institutions in Odo State. The research found that the absence of parents affects a child‟s
socialization and moral growth due to a lack of emotional security and consistent role
models. Poverty further impacts self-esteem, social competence, and emotional stability,
often leading to feelings of inferiority and social isolation. The study also revealed that
while orphanages can foster independence and resilience, they often lack the emotional
support needed for well-rounded personality development. The institutional structure
can also limit a child‟s exposure to diverse social interactions, making it difficult for
them to adapt to life outside the orphanage. The conclusion emphasizes the importance
of a stable, nurturing, and supportive environment for a child‟s healthy development.
The recommendations include implementing programs to support single-parent families,
increasing financial aid for children in poverty, and improving orphanage care with
mentorship, counseling, and diverse social activities
