Abstract
This study examined administrators’ supervisory techniques and teachers’ job performance in public secondary schools in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The descriptive research design of the survey type was employed. The sample size consisted of 160 respondents using simple random sampling technique in ten public schools. A researcher-made questionnaire titled ‘Administrators’ Supervisory Techniques Questionnaire (ASTQ) and Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (TJPQ) were used to elicit response from the respondents. The instruments were validated by researcher’s supervisor and the test re-test method was used to test reliability. Four research questions were raised and answered using frequency counts, percentage, and mean, while three hypotheses were formulated and tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance.
The finding revealed that majority of the respondents affirmed that classroom observation techniques, demonstration technique and workshop supervisory technique has a positive impact on teachers’ job performance.
Therefore, the study concluded that in Akoko North West Local Government Area, the job performances of teachers would be enhanced when they are adequately supervised by principals using the various supervisory techniques. It was therefore recommended that: School principals should ensure effective supervision of teachers’ classroom instruction as this will go a long way to enhance teaching and learning in schools; Government should initiate a periodic training for principals on administrative roles performance; Conferences and seminars be organized for instructional supervisors from time to time to cater for the professional assistance needed by teachers. Also the state Ministry of Education should always finance adequately these conferences and seminars, since teachers believe these solve their professional problems.
