Abstract

Despite the acknowledged potential and government prioritization, the root crops agricultural sector in Enugu State faces multifaceted challenges that hinder its ability to achieve its full potential. A critical constraint lies in the inadequate research and development infrastructure, limiting the development dissemination of improved crop varieties, resilient to pesta and diseases, and adopted to the local environmental conditions. The aim of the research was to assess the building characteristics of a national root crop research institute, with a view to suggesting the building strategies that will enhance the design of a sustainable building that will conform with the activities of the 21st century research institute. The source of information was derived from case studies of some existing research institutes and secondary sources. The data collected were analysed through observation and content analysis. Some design strategies like the integration of essential components such as specialized laboratories, controlled environment, green houses, field research areas, educational collaboration spaces, and sustainable design spaces were suggested at the end of the research.
