ASSESSMENT OF SOME HAEMOSTATIC PARAMETERS AMONG PATIENTS WITH SICKLE CELL ANAEMIA SUBJECT ATTENDING CARE AT ABIA STATE UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL
Abstract
Sickle cell anemia (SCA) has the propensity to interfere with the platelets, procoagulant, anticoagulant, and the fibrinolytic pathway. These altered components may be different or the same based on regions, racial, or environment. This study determined the hemostatic parameters among patients with sickle cell anemia attending care at Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba.
A total of 100 subjects; 50 Hb SS subjects and 50 Hb AA subjects were recruited for the study. Ethical approval for the study was obtained from the ethics committee of ABSUTH as well as informed consent from the participants.
Parameters studied were APTT, PT, and PLT. PLT count was determined using a haematology autoanalyzer, Sysmex KX-21N, while APTT and PT were determined using manual methods and data generated statistically.
The mean ± SD values of APTT and PLT (32.20 ± 3.033 sec, 358.01 ± 4.404 × 10⁹/L, respectively) of Hb SS subjects were statistically higher (p < 0.05) when compared to the control values (28.60 ± 1.140 sec, 278.01 ± 43.243 × 10⁹/L).
The mean ± SD values of APTT (35.33 ± 11.54 sec) of male Hb SS subjects were statistically higher (p < 0.05) when compared to the values for female Hb SS subjects (30.0 ± 0.11 sec).
Findings from this study showed that sickle cell anemia alters haemostatic parameters and also results in thrombocytosis.
