Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the effect of electoral malpractices on democratic governance in Nigeria. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design of survey type. The target population covered the entire Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State with a sample of one hundred and fifty (150) respondents randomly selected for the study through the use of a simple random sampling technique. Structured questionnaires, consisting of two sections and duly validated, were employed as the research instrument. The data collected through the research instruments were analyzed using frequency count and simple percentages, mean and standard deviation. The findings unearthed the primary causes of electoral malpractices in Nigeria's democratic landscape, pinpointing factors like a deficiency in political education, a lack of faith in the political system, and financial inducements as significant contributors. Secondly, the study revealed that incidences of dictatorship and autocratic tendencies are how electoral malpractice has affected good governance in Nigeria. Thirdly, the study revealed that the lack of institutionalization and personalization of political parties in Nigeria are the major implications of electoral malpractices on democratic governance in Nigeria. Lastly, the study revealed that electoral malpractices have accelerated political apathy and electoral institutions become weak and influenced by political parties and their candidates. The study concluded that strict adherence to democratic values and ideals will bring about good democratic governance in the country. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that the principles of good governance should be upheld in Nigeria to eliminate the dangers of bad governance or political instability.
