DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB-BASED COMPLAINT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR HOSTEL STUDENTS (A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, MINNA)
Abstract
Proper handling of complaints is important in the delivery of services in an academic
institution especially in residential areas such as the students’ hostels. A web-based
complaint system will aid in the swift handling of complaint of students that reside in the
campus of the Federal University of Technology, Minna. The current method of handling
complaints in the hostel is stressful as it requires students to personally search for the hostel
patron or matron, as the case may be. The development of this web-based complaint system
provides a stress-free way for students to report their complaints. The system was developed
with the use of HTML, Java programming language, and MySQL, with the Apache NetBeans
IDE. Before the development began, an interview was conducted and the result showed that
the current system of complaint handling is not conducive beneficial, and the introduction of
a web-based handling system will increase the comfort of hostel students. The system allows
hostel student login with their valid login details to submit any complain they have regarding
issues affecting their accommodation, and it stores all complaints for future processing.
Further research should be carried out on the topic to increase the systems security by
allowing only hostel students have access to the system.
