PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF AZADIRACHTA INDICA LEAVES
Abstract
Azadirachta indica, commonly known as neem, is a medicinal plant widely recognized for its
diverse pharmacological properties, including antioxidant and phytochemical activities. This
study investigates the phytochemical composition and antioxidant potential of Azadirachta
indica leaves through various standard laboratory analyses. Phytochemical screening was
conducted to detect the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and other
bioactive compounds. The leaves were extracted using the Soxhlet extraction method, and the
antioxidant potential was evaluated through standard assays, including DPPH (2,2-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging activity and total antioxidant capacity. The results
demonstrated that neem leaves contain significant levels of various phytochemicals,
exhibiting strong antioxidant activities. These findings highlight the potential of Azadirachta
indica leaves as a natural source for combating oxidative stress-related ailments and support
their use in traditional medicine.
