Abstract

This research work investigated into the mechanical properties of interlocking stones produced with broken bottles as a partial replacement for fine aggregate. This research work investigated the following mechanical properties test on the fine aggregate to broken bottles into fine aggregate, to produce paving stones using crushed broken bottles as partial replacement for quarry dust; specific gravity, moisture content, sieve analysis, and bulk density. The paving stone samples were produced using paving stone moulds making use of mix ratio 1:4. The total numbers of 90 paving stone blocks sample were produced (15 blocks for each sample) using various replacement of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%. The compaction was done manually and the paving stone blocks were cured and tested for their compressive strength at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. The 0% replacement which serves as the control (zero control) have higher compressive strength than other replacement for all curing days, The use of broken bottle in paving stone as a fine aggregates reduces the compressive strength of the paving stones and 5% of broken bottle can only be used where load will not be applied on the paving stones, Further research should be carry out to detect what is present in broken bottle that is affecting the strength of paving stone, Other local materials can be used to replaces quarry dust in the production of paving stones.
