Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of Manihot esculenta leaf extract on liver tissues and metabolic functions in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes caused significant hepatic and systemic alterations, as indicated by reduced albumin and total protein concentrations, elevated cholesterol, and marked increases in liver enzymes including AST, ALP, LDH, and GGT. Direct bilirubin was also elevated, reflecting impaired hepatic clearance. These changes were accompanied by persistent hyperglycemia and progressive weight loss, characteristic of uncontrolled diabetes. Treatment with Manihot esculenta leaf extract improved these indices in a dose-dependent manner. Albumin and total protein were restored, cholesterol levels reduced, and liver enzymes normalized, indicating hepatoprotective effects. Direct bilirubin levels were lowered, suggesting improved excretory function. Furthermore, the extract significantly reduced blood glucose levels and prevented weight loss, with higher doses (200 mg and 400 mg) producing effects comparable to metformin. These findings demonstrate that Manihot esculenta leaf extract possesses hepatoprotective, antihyperglycemic, and metabolic-stabilizing properties, which may be attributed to its antioxidant bioactive compounds. The study concludes that the extract holds promise as a natural therapeutic agent for mitigating diabetes-induced liver damage and metabolic dysfunction.
