NIGERIA-BRITISH RELATIONS SINCE 1999
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of Nigeria-British relations since 1999 when Nigeria transitioned to civilian democratic rule after decades of military dictatorship. The study examines the political, economic, and socio-cultural dimensions of the bilateral relationship, as well as the security cooperation between the two countries. Politically, the study finds that the UK supported Nigeria's democratic transition by engaging the new government and providing technical assistance to improve governance, but faced criticism over foreign policies seen as neocolonial. Economically, trade and investment relations strengthened as the UK promoted Nigeria's market reforms, though challenges remained around infrastructure gaps and corruption. Socio-culturally, people-to-people ties expanded through the growing Nigerian diaspora in Britain and increased educational and professional exchanges. Security cooperation intensified, with the UK supporting Nigeria's counterinsurgency efforts against Boko Haram. However, the study also highlights the persistent influence of colonial history, which has created lingering sensitivities and complicated the partnership at times. The research concludes that while Nigeria and the UK have made significant progress in strengthening their multifaceted relationship since 1999, fully optimizing this important partnership will require carefully navigating the complexities arising from their shared history and current priorities. The study offers policy recommendations to enhance strategic cooperation and mitigate challenges, underscoring the relevance of this evolving bilateral relationship for both countries and the wider region.
