THE RISE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION IN NIGERIAN, HISTORICAL ROOTS AND CURRENT TRENDS (2010-2023)
Abstract
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Entrepreneurship and innovation have played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s economic landscape, particularly in the post-2010 era. These elements are not only crucial for fostering economic growth and reducing unemployment but also serve as instruments for addressing structural challenges in the Nigerian economy. Historically, entrepreneurial activities in Nigeria were deeply rooted in traditional crafts, agrarian economies, and local trade networks, which thrived despite colonial exploitation and the economic volatility of the post-independence era. In recent decades, however, entrepreneurship in Nigeria has undergone a profound transformation, spurred by technological advancements, demographic shifts, and government policy interventions.[ Adebayo, Samson, and Ibrahim Musa. "Youth Entrepreneurship and Economic Development in Nigeria." International Journal of Business and Social Science 12, no. 5 (2018): 34–49.]
Nigeria’s position as Africa’s largest economy and its vibrant youthful population provide a fertile ground for entrepreneurial activities. Over the period 2010–2024, the proliferation of digital technologies, the rise of startups, and the establishment of innovation hubs have significantly transformed the entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, these developments coexist with systemic challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, access to capital, and policy inconsistencies. Despite these hurdles, Nigerian entrepreneurs continue to demonstrate resilience, leveraging innovation to address local problems and create new markets.[ Fapohunda, Tinuke. "Youth Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment in Nigeria." Nigerian Journal of Youth Development 12, no. 4 (2020): 19–37.]
This study seeks to explore the historical roots and recent trends of entrepreneurship and innovation in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the period between 2010 and 2024. By examining these dynamics, the research aims to uncover the socio-economic drivers of entrepreneurial growth, the role of technology in shaping innovation, and the broader implications for Nigeria’s economic development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Entrepreneurship in Nigeria is often celebrated for its role in economic diversification, yet there is a significant gap in understanding the factors driving its evolution over the last decade. While the rise of startups and tech-based enterprises has garnered attention, there is limited research on how historical legacies and cultural practices have influenced contemporary entrepreneurial activities. Similarly, the role of innovation in addressing socio-economic challenges, such as unemployment and poverty, remains inadequately studied.
Many existing studies focus on the successes of Nigerian entrepreneurs in global markets, neglecting the underlying constraints they face locally, such as bureaucratic bottlenecks, lack of access to funding, and an unstable policy environment. Furthermore, while innovation hubs and digital platforms have emerged as catalysts for growth, little is known about their long-term sustainability or their ability to impact sectors beyond technology.
This study aims to bridge these gaps by examining the historical and cultural roots of entrepreneurship in Nigeria and analyzing the recent trends that have defined the period between 2010 and 2024. Through this approach, the research seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities within Nigeria’s entrepreneurial landscape.
1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to analyze the rise of entrepreneurship and innovation in Nigeria, focusing on historical foundations and recent developments from 2010 to 2024.
The objectives of the study are as follows:
I.To examine the historical evolution of entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
II.To identify key trends in innovation and entrepreneurship between 2010 and 2024.
III.To assess the socio-economic impacts of entrepreneurial activities on Nigeria’s economy.
IV.To evaluate the challenges and opportunities facing Nigerian entrepreneurs during this period.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it contributes to the academic discourse on entrepreneurship by contextualizing Nigerian entrepreneurial activities within historical, cultural, and technological frameworks. By exploring the historical roots, the study provides insights into how traditional practices and colonial legacies continue to influence modern entrepreneurship.
Second, the research underscores the role of innovation in addressing contemporary socio-economic challenges. By analyzing the recent trends between 2010 and 2024, the study highlights how Nigerian entrepreneurs have leveraged technology and creativity to create new opportunities and drive economic growth.
Finally, the study addresses a critical gap in the literature by focusing on the nexus between historical dynamics and modern trends, serving as a reference point to academics, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and development organizations.
1.5 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This research focuses on the historical roots and recent trends of entrepreneurship and innovation in Nigeria between 2010 and 2024. It examines the socio-economic, cultural, and technological factors that have shaped entrepreneurial activities during this period.
The study is limited by several factors. First, access to comprehensive data on informal entrepreneurial activities may be constrained due to their undocumented nature. Second, the focus on Nigeria’s national context means that regional variations and sector-specific dynamics may not be exhaustively explored. Finally, while the study seeks to provide a broad overview of the period under review, some trends may require more granular analysis beyond the scope of this research.
