Abstract

ABSTRACT The housefly (Musca domestica) is a common pest that has been implicated in the transmission of variety of medically important parasites and pathogens. The study aimed to determine the role of houseflies in the transmission of parasites within Katsina Metropolis. A total of 135 houseflies were collected from four different environments: Abattoir (60), residential areas (15), Yan Gwari markets (20), and waste disposal sites (30) and were examined for medically important parasites using normal saline concentration techniques. Out of the 135 houseflies collected, 54.81% were found to be infected with one or more parasites. The parasites identified included: Protozoa: Entamoeba histolytican (18.12%), Ascaris lumbricoides (13.11%), Giardia lamblia (19.77%), Entamoeba coli (8.12%) and Hymenlepis nana (1.25%). Environmental Influence: Waste Disposal Sites had the highest prevalence of parasitic infections (60), Abattoir had the second highest prevalence of the parasitic infection (58.3), Yan Gwari Markets had a slightly lower prevalence (40%), and Residential Areas had the lowest prevalence (25). These parasites are known to cause various gastrointestinal and systemic diseases in humans. Keywords: Housefly, Medically important parasites, Katsina.
