FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH POOR ANTHROPOMETRIC OUTCOMES IN SCHOOL AGED ADOLESCENT BOYS AND GIRLS FROM RIMI TOWN, RIMI LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
Abstract
Adolescence is a critical period of physical, psychological, and social development, and is characterized by rapid growth and increased nutritional demands. This stage is sensitive to malnutrition owing to the increased physiological need for nutrients. Adequate nutrition during this phase is essential for achieving optimal physical and cognitive development, as well as for laying the foundation for healthy adulthood. Adolescence is the last chance for breaking the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition and poor health. Despite this fact, they have been considered as a low-risk group for poor health and nutrition problems than the young children or the very old. The dietary patterns of adolescents from Rimi town often include high consumption of carbohydrate and low intake of animal protein and dietary fat. Low socioeconomic status is common among them. Most of the boys have low BMI and MUAC while all girls have low BMI and MUAC. This revealed a prevalence of underweight among school aged adolescent boys and girls in Rimi town, Rimi local Government, Katsina State. Low consumption of protein may have contributed to the observed prevalence. The Middle Upper Arm Circumference of the adolescents revealed a prevalence of malnutrition. Low socioeconomic status may have also contributed to malnutrition among the school aged adolescents.
