THE ROLE OF OSBC RADIO IN THE FIGHT AGAINST STREET HAWKING IN OSOGBO
Abstract
Street hawking has become a major social issue in many urban centres in Nigeria. It exposes children, youths, and even adults to risks such as accidents, exploitation, abuse, and poor educational outcomes. The mass media, especially radio, have an important role to play in addressing social problems through information dissemination, public enlightenment, and behavioural influence. This study examines the role of OSBC Radio in the fight against street hawking in Osogbo.
The study investigates how OSBC Radio uses its programmes, news reports, public service announcements, and discussions to create awareness about the dangers of street hawking and encourage public action against it. Data for the study may be collected through questionnaires administered to listeners in Osogbo and interviews with selected staff of the station.
The findings are expected to reveal that OSBC Radio contributes significantly to the fight against street hawking by educating the public on its dangers, promoting child welfare, and supporting government and community efforts aimed at reducing the practice. The study may also show that radio messages influence public perception and encourage parents and guardians to reconsider sending children out for hawking.
The study concludes that OSBC Radio plays an important role in social advocacy and public enlightenment against street hawking in Osogbo. It recommends increased educational programming, collaboration with government agencies, and regular sensitization campaigns to strengthen the fight against street hawking.
