Abstract

Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) is a 'hroad spectrum antimicrobial agent which is active in vitro against a wide variety of micro-organisms Twenty-four male albino rats were divided randomly into four groups of six rats each and were labelled. Group 1 (control group) received water and feed only, Group II were treated with 1337.5mg/kg of the LD50 of Co-trimoxazole, Group III were treated with 2675mg/kg of the LD50 of Co-trimoxazole and Group IV were treated with 4012.5mg/kg of the LD50 of Co-trimoxazole daily for seven days. At the end of drug administration period, the body weight of the animals were determined and recorded respectively. The animals were sacrificed and the Testes was harvested and fixed immediately in 10% formal saline for histological studies. The tissue sections were routinely processed, 5micrometer sections were sectioned using a rotary microtome. Sections of each tissue were stained with H&E staining technique. Photomicrograph of the slides were captured and results recorded. The result Group I (control) had a mean weight of 130+3.47g before the experiment whereas 138±4.12g was the weight after the experiment. Group II had a mean weight of 134±4.83g before the experiment whereas 140±3.27g was the weight after the experiment. Group III had a mean weight of 136±4.12g before the experiment whereas 141±4.10g was the weight after the experiment. Group IV had a mean weight of 130±3.12g before the experiment whereas 132±3.19g was the weight after the experiment. Histological examination revealed that the control rats showed the normal architecture of the Testes and the treated rats (group II, III, and IV), showed The mature spermatid density is variable in tubule and on average. The rats were weighed before and after the drug administration and the result obtained revealed that there was statistically significant difference (p>0.05) on the weights of the treated albino rats in comparism with those for control. Hence this effects were observed to be not dose dependent.
