THE PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF AMARANTHUS SPINOSUS L. AND SESAMUM INDICUM L. METHANOL EXTRACTS ON ETHANOL-INDUCED GASTRIC MUCOSAL INJURY
Abstract
Gastric mucosal injury Is a common disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. The utilization of medicinal plants has long been significant in both traditional and modern medicine as a means of treating various human diseases and disorders. Amaranthus spinosus L(family Amaranthaceae) is commonly known as Spiny amaranth (Ewe-tẹtẹ ẹlẹgun) is used for the treatment of internal bleeding, diarrhea, excessive menstruation, stomach disorder, ulcerated mouths, nosebleeds and wounds. Sesamum indicum L is an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the Pedaliaceae family, is commonly known as sesame (Gogo or Yamati). This study investigated the protective effects of Amaranthus spinosus L. and Sesamum indicum L. methanol extracts on ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury. Thirty-six(36) healthy wistar rats were grouped into nine(9) of four (4) animals. Cimetidine 400mg/kg was administered to the positive control group while each extract treatment received 50, 100, 200mg/kg. The animals was pretreated with Amaranthus spinosus and Sesamum indicum extracts using oral canula. Measurements (mm) of gastric ulcerations following their induction was done after an hour by dissecting the stomach along its greater curvature. The results of A. spinosus and S. indicum methanol extracts showed their ameliorating effects on the injury when compared control group. The results of this study recorded higher activity in Sesamum indicum methanol extracts at 200mg/kg (0.87mm) than cimetidine 400mg/kg (0.90mm), the reference drug. It was also observed that Sesamum indicum extract exhibited higher activity than Amaranthus spinosus in all the concentrations. This finding revealed strong gastroprotective effect S. indicum extract which might be due to phytochemical constituents present
