INFLUENCE OF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ON QUALITY HEALTH CARE DELIVERY AMONG HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL IN UPTH
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of training and development on quality healthcare delivery among Health Information Management (HIM) personnel in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. The growing complexity of healthcare systems and the increasing reliance on accurate health data necessitate continuous capacity building for HIM professionals. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design, targeting HIM personnel within the hospital. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods.
Findings reveal that training and development significantly enhance the technical competence, data management skills, and overall job performance of HIM personnel. Regular training programs, workshops, and professional development initiatives were found to improve accuracy in medical records management, timeliness of information processing, and effective use of health information systems. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, irregular training schedules, and limited access to modern technologies were identified as barriers to optimal performance.
The study concludes that effective training and development programs are critical to improving the quality of healthcare delivery, as HIM personnel play a vital role in ensuring reliable health data for clinical decision-making. It is recommended that hospital management prioritize continuous professional development, invest in modern health information technologies, and implement structured training policies to enhance service delivery and patient outcomes
