Abstract

Abstract This study examines the influence of social media use on socio-cultural changes among students of Lens Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State. With the increasing prevalence of social media platforms, students' cultural values, norms, and behaviors are increasingly shaped by digital interactions. The study explores how social media impacts traditional cultural adherence, interpersonal relationships, lifestyle choices, and cultural identity, highlighting both the positive and negative effects of these platforms on socio-cultural dynamics. Guided by the Uses and Gratifications Theory and Social Identity Theory, the study employs a survey research design, with a sample size of 362 participants selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings reveal that social media significantly influences students’ socio-cultural behaviors, including increased exposure to global cultures, adoption of new trends, and changes in traditional values. While social media fosters connectivity and cultural awareness, it also poses challenges to the preservation of local cultural heritage. Students frequently use social media for academic purposes, entertainment, and communication, spending significant amounts of time on these platforms daily. The study identifies both the enriching and disruptive roles of social media in shaping socio-cultural dynamics. This research contributes to the understanding of the complex relationship between social media and culture among young adults in tertiary institutions. It underscores the need for institutions to promote digital literacy, encourage responsible social media use, and implement policies to safeguard cultural heritage in the digital age. The study also provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers on the dual impact of social media on cultural values and student behavior. Future research is recommended to explore the long-term socio-cultural implications of social media use among diverse populations.
