Abstract

Sex education is crucial for promoting healthy attitudes and behaviours among young women. However, in Nigeria, sex education remains a contentious issue, with limited research on its effectiveness. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours related to sex education among female students in Adekunle Ajasin University. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis methods. A total of 400 female students participated in the study, representing various faculties and levels of study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours related to sex education. The study revealed significant gaps in knowledge, particularly regarding contraceptive methods and safe sex practices. Positive attitudes towards sex education were reported, but misconceptions and stigma persisted. The study also found that 40% of respondents had engaged in sexual intercourse, with 25% reporting unprotected sex. Media, peers, and family members were identified as primary sources of sex education information. This study highlights the need for comprehensive sex education programs addressing the specific needs of young women in Nigeria. The findings inform policy and practice initiatives aimed at promoting healthier attitudes and behaviours. Recommendations include intensifying sex education programs in schools, addressing misconceptions and stigma, increasing access to contraceptive education and resources, and leveraging media and technology to disseminate accurate sex education information. This study contributes to the existing literature on sex education among young women in Nigeria and has implications for promoting healthy behaviours and reducing health risks.
