A STUDY OF COOPERATIVE FOR ASSISTANCE AND RELIEF EVERYWHERE (CARE) AND ITS ROLE IN ALIENATING POVERTY IN NIGERIA 1992-2024
Abstract
Poverty remains one of the major socio-economic challenges facing Nigeria despite numerous governmental and non-governmental interventions. This study examines the role of Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) in alleviating poverty in Nigeria between 1992 and 2024. The research explores CARE’s programs, strategies, and contributions toward improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations across various communities. Using secondary data sources such as reports, journals, books, and official publications, the study analyzes CARE’s interventions in areas including livelihood support, education, women empowerment, health, and community development. Findings reveal that CARE has played a significant role in reducing poverty by providing financial support, capacity building, agricultural assistance, and empowerment initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainable livelihoods. The study also identifies challenges such as limited resources, policy constraints, and implementation barriers that affect the full impact of these programs. The research concludes that while CARE has made notable contributions to poverty reduction in Nigeria, stronger collaboration with government agencies, improved funding, and enhanced monitoring mechanisms are necessary to achieve long-term sustainable development.
