Abstract

This study explores the role of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in diplomacy, focusing on its functions, strategies, challenges, and effectiveness in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives. Since gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria has sought to assert its influence globally, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs playing a central role in shaping and executing the country’s foreign relations. The research highlights the Ministry's involvement in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, particularly within Africa, as well as its efforts in economic diplomacy and peacekeeping missions through regional organizations like ECOWAS. Secondary data were sourced from academic publications, official reports, internet, books and relevant literature on Nigeria’s foreign policy. The study identifies major challenges faced by the Ministry, including Inadequate Funding, Capacity Constraints, Political Instability and Domestic Challenges, Limited Influence in Multilateral Organizations and Changing Dynamics of Global Diplomacy. The findings reveal that while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instrumental in promoting Nigeria's foreign policy goals, particularly in African affairs and global economic relations, it faces significant obstacles that hinder its effectiveness. The study concludes with recommendations for strengthening the Ministry’s capacity to engage in dynamic and responsive diplomacy, ensuring Nigeria’s continued relevance on the international stage.
