Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia and associated complications, including dyslipidemia. This study investigated the anti-diabetic and lipid-modulating effects of ethanol seed extract of Buchholzia coriacea in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Experimental diabetes was induced in albino rats using a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ. The animals were divided into control, diabetic control, and treatment groups receiving varying doses of Buchholzia coriacea ethanol seed extract. Treatment was administered for a specified period, after which biochemical parameters were assessed. Fasting blood glucose levels were monitored, and lipid profile parameters including total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were evaluated using standard methods. Results showed a significant reduction in blood glucose levels in extract-treated groups compared to the diabetic control. Additionally, the extract significantly decreased total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL levels, while increasing HDL levels. The findings suggest that ethanol seed extract of Buchholzia coriacea possesses notable anti-diabetic and hypolipidemic properties, potentially due to its bioactive phytochemical constituents. This supports its traditional use in the management of diabetes and associated lipid abnormalities. Further studies are recommended to elucidate its mechanism of action and potential for clinical application.
