IMPACT OF FLOODING ON AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES IN SUPARE AKOKO
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of flooding on agricultural activities in Supare Akoko, Nigeria. Flooding poses significant threats to agricultural productivity, food security, and rural livelihoods in Supare-Akoko. This study investigates the causes and consequences of flooding on agricultural activities, exploring its impact on crop yield, soil fertility, and farmers' livelihoods. The research also identifies soil conservation practices adopted by farmers and socio-economic factneed for effective flood risk management, climate-resilient agriculture, and policy interventions to mitigate the impacts of flooding.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining questionnaire surveys and secondary data analysis. The findings reveal that heavy rainfall, poor drainage, and human activities contribute to flooding, resulting in soil erosion, crop damage, and displacement of farmers.
A survey of 200 respondents revealed that 68% experienced reduced crop yields due to flooding. The primary causes of flooding were heavy rainfall (48.5%) and poor drainage (30%). The majority of respondents (46.5%) were between 31-40 years old, with males dominating (63.5%). Farmers comprised 45% of respondents. Soil conservation measures were practiced by 90% of respondents, with contour farming (46%) and terracing (30%) being most common.
The study recommends implementing effective soil conservation practices, drainage systems, flood-resistant farming, climate-resilient agriculture training, and early warning systems to mitigate flood impacts.
