Abstract

Heavy metals in soils from a poultry and a mechanic workshop in Offa was compared in this study. The soil samples were collected from mechanic workshop and poultry in Offa, Kwara state. They were labelled in polythene bags and then taken to the laboratory for digestion and analysis using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The Association of Official Analytical Chemist (AOAC 2000), method was used to analyze the following metals Nickel, Lead, Chromium, Cobalt and Cadmium. The following result of heavy metals were obtained, Ni (0.23 mg/100g), Pb (0.02 mg/100g), Co (0.56 mg/100g) Cr (4.72 mg/100g) and Cd (0.11 mg/100g) for poultry. And for mechanic workshop, Ni (1.11 mg/100g), Pb (6.01 mg/100g), Co (5.42 mg/100g) Cr (2.60 mg/100g) and Cd (.60 mg/100g). By comparison, the result shows that mechanic workshop contributes more of the heavy metals assessed in the environment except for a chromium whose concentration was found to be slightly higher in poultry.
