INFLUENCE OF CHILD ABUSE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN AKOKO SOUTH WEST OF ONDO STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of child abuse on the academic performance of secondary school students in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria. Child abuse, which includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect, has become a significant social problem with far-reaching consequences on the educational development of students. The study aims to examine the various forms of child abuse experienced by students, determine their effects on academic performance, and identify possible measures to mitigate these effects.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The target population comprised secondary school students in selected schools within the study area. A structured questionnaire was used as the main instrument for data collection, and the data obtained were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency tables. The findings revealed that child abuse is prevalent among secondary school students and significantly affects their academic performance. It was also discovered that students who experience abuse tend to exhibit poor concentration, low self-esteem, irregular school attendance, and reduced academic achievement.
The study concludes that child abuse has a negative impact on the academic performance of students and poses a serious threat to their overall development. Based on the findings, it is recommended that parents, teachers, and government agencies intensify efforts to prevent child abuse through awareness campaigns, counseling services, and strict enforcement of child protection laws. Schools should also provide supportive learning environments to help affected students improve their academic outcomes.
